When Does My Vehicle Need a Diagnostic Check?

There are a handful of times when a vehicle diagnostic check is in order for your car, truck, CUV, or SUV. The test not only helps auto mechanics determine what is wrong with a vehicle, but it is also a snapshot of a vehicle’s overall health. For example, if you are buying a used car, a diagnostic test can help find problems invisible to the naked eye. These are the reasons why Del Hatt Automotive uses diagnostic testing in our automobile service and repair. Let’s talk more about this important tool.

The Check Engine Light Is On

If your check engine light comes on, a diagnostic check will tell us right away why that light refuses to turn off. The test might point us to the emissions system, such as problems with the catalytic converter or oxygen sensor. It could also be an ignition problem, such as the spark plugs. Some of these problems are hard to diagnose on their own, and the diagnostic test points us in the right direction.

Another System Light Is On

Your vehicle is also equipped with system warning lights that direct us to that system but not necessarily the problem. For example, if your brake light comes on and we can’t see any problems when we inspect the brakes, the diagnostic check will return an error code to identify the brake system trouble. Another example is the battery light, which means an electrical concern somewhere in your car.

There Seems to Be An Electrical Problem

Speaking of electrical problems, there are a couple of things to consider. First, you can’t always find the problem right away unless there is a tell-tell sign, such as a blown fuse or burning smell. Second, the burning smell is bad and any electrical problem in your vehicle can be dangerous. Electrical shorts and fuel do not mix, and the diagnostic check can tell us there’s a problem in the electrical system.

We Need to See the Data

Finally, sometimes a diagnostic check provides crucial data and peace of mind. The used car example above is just one way this data is helpful. Another reason why we might recommend a diagnostic test is that we can’t find the problem on our own. We’re human, and if your vehicle has a hidden problem like some of the ones mentioned in this blog post, the diagnostic test will point us in the right direction.
